We are looking for a tool that will help improve the patient journey – for example – mapping out the effectiveness of different cannabis strains, managing dosing and delivery, documenting the experience and improving prescriber-patient and the potential future pharmacist-patient interaction.

Medical cannabis helps manage symptoms of cancer, arthritis, and epilepsy and other chronic conditions allowing patients to remain engaged at work, school and play. We are looking for tools that help medical cannabis patients thrive outside the home – whether its by reducing stigma in the workplace or providing reassurance that they are ready for the task at hand.

A mismatch exists between legalization and preparation of medical practitioners to prescribe medical cannabis. In a 2017 study of medical residents and fellows at Washington University, for example, close to 90 per cent felt not at all prepared to prescribe medical cannabis. We are looking for tools that will help doctors, nurses, and pharmacists advise, prescribe, and utilize medical cannabis for the benefit of their patients.

In Canada and the United States mental illness affects 1 in 5 adults. In Canada mental illness is one of the leading causes of disability and in the United States costs the economy $193.2 billion per year. Yet, half of people suffering from mental health problems do not receive treatment.  Patients, families and providers are searching for new tools and care models that speed diagnosis, improve access to care, enhance treatment and support caregivers.
It is estimated that chronic pain costs Canada $6 billion in treatment and $37 billion in lost productivity. It is also fueling the rising challenge of opioid addiction.  New approaches, tools, care models, and services are needed to better support patients and their families, and improve pain and medication management.

Sleep well, eat well, exercise and feel connected.  Easier said than done.  We are looking for innovative solutions that help people lead a healthier lifestyle.  As part of this wide-open category, we are also looking for tools that break the bounds of isolation – loneliness, living alone, having social networks and activities – which research has shown poses serious health risks on the magnitude of obesity and smoking.
Here are five ways that you can participate in Hacking Health Windsor + Detroit:
